What We Do

The John H. Scott Memorial Scholarships

The John H. Scott Memorial Scholarship was established in 1981. Since that time, the Scholarship has served as the major and most visible project sponsored by the Fund. The scholarship awards have been given out every year since 1982, progressing from two to eight students supported each year.

Two scholarships, one in the amount of $6000 and the other in the amount of $3000, are available to students who are candidates for graduation at a public high school in Tensas, Madison or East Carroll Parish, Louisiana.  Applications can be obtained from the public schools in the above parishes, from the JHS Fund, or from the JHS Fund's website.  The application will be available January 10th. The deadline is April 5th.

Alease J. Scott Memorial Award

Alease Juanita Scott was the wife of Rev. Scott and an activist in her own right. An award is offered annually in her name to honor a person who promotes community improvement and pride, mainly through work in organizations. You may nominate a community member or someone may nominate themselves. For more information, go HERE and scroll to the bottom of the page.

Career Connections Program

What is often missing for students coming from rural areas, particularly areas with high poverty? Connections!! The Memorial Fund launched its Career Connections Program in 2021 to connect our scholars to professionals in careers that match our scholars' desired career path. Our mentors expose our scholars to different career options to help them make more informed choices, provide them advice on graduate school, and help scholars with their goals.

Incidental Fund Program

There are many costs associated with going to college other than tuition and room and board. In 2020, the Fund was approached by a donor who wanted to help our scholarship recipients with some of these extra costs. The new Incidental Fund Program which was launched in January 2021 provides each of our eight students up to $500 extra per school year for expenses such as books, laptops, lab fees, grad school application fees, emergency travel and other emergencies as they arise.

Dolly Parton Imagination Library Program

The John H. Scott Memorial Fund began a collaboration with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in 2021. Through this collaboration, any child four or younger with a Lake Providence, LA address can enroll to receive a free book each month.

Since 1982, through our annual Scholarship Awards, we have provided financial support to hundreds of young people from northeast Louisiana. Continuing in Reverend Scott's legacy the Fund has been at the forefront of supporting education and access to education for 40 years.
