The Rev. John H. Scott Memorial Scholarship Checklist

  • You are a candidate for graduation at a public high school in Tensas, Madison or East Carroll Parish.

  • You have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above.

  • You plan to attend a four-year college by fall 2024.

  • Your application is completed and submitted by April 5, 2024.

  • You have included your essay, short video, and one letter of recommendation.

  • You will be available to attend the public or virtual program on the first Saturday in May.

  • Applications will be available January 10th.

The Essay

The late Reverend Scott was a minister who resided in East Carroll Parish until his death in 1980.  He believed that people should stand up for their human and civil rights and for those of their fellow man.  He believed that people should resist and never be satisfied with unfair treatment.  In an essay of 1-2 typewritten pages (double-spaced, 12pt. font), tell why you would like to be awarded a scholarship that memorializes the life of this Christian activist.

The Video

Reverend John H. Scott was a human and civil rights activist that spearheaded the movement for voter rights in East Carroll Parish in the 1960’s and remained a community leader until his death in 1980.  In a short 3-4 minute video, explain how if given the John H. Scott Memorial Fund Scholarship, you would honor and continue his legacy. Upload your video to YouTube and link your video to your application. The public will vote for their favorite video. A special award will be given during the annual scholarship program to the applicant that receives the most votes.

*Application videos will be used as promotional material for the Reverend John H. Scott Memorial Fund*

The Letter of Recommendation

Someone who can attest to your character and scholarship should write the letter.  Letters of recommendation can be emailed directly to the John H. Scott Memorial Fund at jhsfund@gmail.com or uploaded through the online application. We STRONGLY encourage electronic submission, but you may mail letters of recommendation to P.O. BOX 74901, BATON ROUGE, LA, 70874.  Letters must be received by the April 5th deadline.
