The John H. Scott Memorial Fund Newsletter

November 2011

  • Your Contributions are Appreciated!

Because of your donations to The J. H. Scott Memorial Fund, we have been able to provide another year of support to worthy young people who without our help, may not be able to pursue their dreams of a better future.  We know that there are many other worthy organizations that you could have selected to receive your donation.  We are certainly appreciative that you selected the Fund!  Because of greater financial support and increased needs during the recession, the Board voted to increase the amount of the annual scholarships and added a grant program.  Read below to find out more about how your dollars are used to help worthy young people succeed.  We ask for your continued support.

  • Scholarship Awards Increased

Thanks to your donations, the Fund’s first place award was increased from $2000 to $3000 this year and the second place award was increased from $1200 to $2000.  On May 7th at the Madison/Tallulah Civic Center, we awarded our first $3000 scholarship to Ariell Brown of Rayville High School.  Brown is currently a freshman at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.  Alex Charles Ward of Newellton, La, a graduate of Tensas High, received second place.  Ward is a freshman at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA where he is majoring in Agricultural Economics.  This was a very competitive year of highly qualified applicants such as Jessica Jones, Alescia Riggs, and ShanDeric Washington of Madison High and Xavier Tennant of Rayville High, who all presented their essays at the annual program. All applicants in attendance received gifts consisting of useful items for school. The Fund’s Vice President, Kendrick Pullen, served as the Master of Ceremony.

The keynote address was delivered by Khalif El-Amin of Milwaukee, WI, a grandson of Rev. J. H. Scott and a 2009 graduate of the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point where he was point guard and team captain of his championship basketball team.  El-Amin, who is currently Assistant to the President/CEO at New Horizon Center, Inc, a family-run Social Services agency, spoke on “Time”, encouraging the audience to use time wisely, patiently persevering to achieve goals.
