Grant Recipients

In 2011, the J. H. Scott Memorial Fund offered two grants, up to a maximum of $1000 each, to support youth services. The following were eligible to apply:

1) Educators or educational institutions

2) Youth Clubs/organizations or nonprofit organizations that work with youth

3) Religious organizations

Grant 1 was restricted to applicants operating in the following parishes: Richland, Tensas, Madison, West or East Carroll Parish.

Grant 2 was unrestricted by location.

They were to be used to support projects or programs that:

  • Expand educational opportunities for youth, particularly in mathematics, science, & technology.
  • Facilitate participation of children in cultural events or activities.
  • Promote personal development

Delta HeadStart, Lake Providence, LA

Coordinator: Phametta Griffin Turner (teacher)

Project Name or Title: Project "YEP"

(Youth Enhancement for Pre-K)

Project Description: This project was developed to afford youth in Lake Providence the opportunity to expand their view beyond the borders of their town.  In turn, exposing the youth to the educational and economical opportunities that exist in other areas.

Benjamin Banneker Elementary and Middle School, New Orleans, LA

Executive/Principal/Pastor: Cheryllyn Branche, Principal

Community Partnerships Coordinator: George Martin 

Project Name or Title: FLL Robotics Teams

Project Description: First Lego League (FLL) is a competition that sets teams of middle school students against each other to construct and operate robots to accomplish tasks. The goals of the program are to increase youth interest in technology and engineering. We are seeking funding to extend the robotics program into the next school year (materials must be purchased by the summer of 2012). This project increases student interest in the general fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
